Boom Mic
Is there an external microphone for the Canon HV30 that can be used as both a Shotgun Mic and a boom mic?
(obviously not at the same time)
A shotgun mic can be used on a boom - so I guess any shotgun mic can be used as a boom mic. Just because you mount the mic to a boom does not change its requirements.
If you go to Sennheiser or AudioTechnica or any high end mic manufacturer, you will find a category of "Shotgun mic". There is no "Boom mic" category. You can technically mount any mic to a boom... You will want a shockmount on the boom to isolate the mic so it does not pick up the noise of the person handling the boom.
A shotgun mic has certain characteristics that allow it to focus its audio pick-up pattern and reject audio from the sides of the mic.
The Canon HV30 has a stereo 1/8" (3.5mm) audio in jack. The cables used with this connection are typically not shielded. When you put the mic on a boom, the cable will be long - and you want it to be shielded... this typically means XLR connectors. Use an XLR adapter from juicedLink or BeachTek to connect XLR mics to consumer-grade camcorders without XLR audio-inputs.
