Guitar power supplies AC & DC?

Ive been looking for a standard Power Supply for my guitar pedals. Most of my pedals are 9vdc, but I have a Hughes & Kettner Rotosphere which is 12vac and a Digitech delay which is 9Vac.

DC (Direct Current) is a steady voltage, like from a battery.

In AC (Alternating Current) the voltage polarity swaps positive and negative over then back again fifty times each second (or 60 in some countries - 50Hz or 60Hz).

The mains supply is AC, and AC can be passed through simple transformers to change the voltage. High power DC is more complex to work with, so AC is used for mains distribution.

Your 9V AC pedal may work with the 9V DC power supply. Quite probably the power input goes straight to a rectifier to change it to DC anyway, so the pedal will not 'see' any difference.

If it uses a more complex circuit, it may need both polarities of the AC input and not work with DC. Try it and see if it works OK?

The 12V one is unlikely to work as the 9V DC is just too low. It should not hurt to try it briefly, but don't get your hopes up.

If you get a separate 12V (and / or 9V) AC supply, be very! careful not to connect it to a DC pedal by mistake, it's almost guaranteed to fry it..
