What is the best microphone for a narrative film shot on video?
This is for an ultra low budget horror flick shot on a Sony pd 150. I already have a good Shotgun Mic. I've used in in conjunction with a lav, but there is too much action in this case (it will got jostled and make noise). I also have two RE-50 Hand Held mics, but I'm not sure if those will be any good. I I'd like to know if a cardiod is the way to go for a second mic and if so which one? Cost isn't so much an issue since we plan on renting if we can't buy.
I already have the hypercardiod. I was thinking of a regular cardiod, but one made specially for film, so when dialog gets a little hectic, especially during an action sequence, you have more leeway.
I think you have the right mics, it's just a matter of how you use them. There is definitely an art to micing for the camera, and it helps to have someone to guide you.
First off, you have your shotgun. I will assume you are using a boom pole- if not, be sure to get one. Shotguns are hypercardioid, meaning they reject sound from all directions except what it is pointing directly at. Make sure you have a good, solid shock-mount, which will attach the mic to the pole while suspending it to reduce vibrations. Second, a wind sock to go over the mic will reduce wind noise. Be sure to tape down the Mic Cable to the pole, to never touch the cable while recording, and the hold the pole by the fingertips, slightly rotating it towards whoever is talking. If your camera has audio meters, set the volume so that normal sounds are just below peak/red and the loudest sounds peak, and then give the mic operator headphones to monitor the quality (not volume) of the sound.
If you want to use the lav, make (or buy) a little tent for it that will go around the capsule and keep it from touching any fabric or skin. Place it on the chest about six-eight inches below the mouth.
If you are determined to buy a new mic, here's what you need to know. Shotguns are hypercardioid, work well from a distance andreject sound from most directions, cardioids have a slightly wider frequency response but accept a wider angle of sound- omnidirectional mics sound the best, but pick up any sound from any direction and work best in close proximity.
