Lavalier Mic
using lav mics with handheld cameras?
I was wondering if it's possible to use a Lav Mic like the one in this picture http://multimedia.journalism.berkeley.edu/tutorials/video/vidcam_accessories/lavalier/ with a handheld camera (specifically a sony handycam dcr-sr42)? obviously the camera doesn't come with what I need, but are there any audio adapters or something that i can use for it? Or maybe i could get something that would record the audio from the mics separate from the camera? Thanks for any help
Well here's the thing. Your camera doesn't have any mic inputs so even if you had an XLR adapter, there would be no way to get the audio into your camera. You could spring for a separate audio recorder such as the Zoom H2, but it costs $150 and you will still need to get an XLR adapter if you plan on using XLR mics. Also, you will need a clapboard to sync the sound with the picture. I don't know what kind of projects you are working on, but if they don't specifically involve sit-down interviews, I would recommend getting a Shotgun Mic and mounting it on a boompole. The Rode Videomic is a good choice and is only $150, while the more expensive $250 NTG-2 sounds a bit better and has XLR connections for longer cable lengths with little or no interference. You can get XLR adapters from Radioshack for $15-$20, but more expensive adapters such as the $170 DXA-2s will give you more control over the sound.The Zoom H2 sounds pretty good just by itself but handling noise may be an issue and the omnidirectional pickup pattern might not suit you as well.
