How do I get my new microphone to work?
I just bought a Samson R31S Performer (Concert/Stage) microphone, plugged it into the "Line-in," port on my stereo, but it's not working. What else do I need to get my mic working? New to this... 
First off, you have a Dynamic Microphone, which means it doesn't require external power (also known as Phantom Power). That's good.
The Line In jack doesn't have any built in gain to it, because it expects a strong signal. Microphones have a weak signal, so you need to find the "Mic In" jack. These have built in gain, so that the weaker mic signals can be amplified into line in signals, which can then be amplified through the speakers.
If you don't have a Mic In jack, then you'll need something to boost your mic level up to line level... you need a Mic Preamp. These can range in price from under 100$ to many thousands, so it's a pretty crazy mess out there in terms of what to buy.
My suggestion is to go to a music store and ask them if they have a cheap mic preamp, and explain what you're trying to do. I know that a while back musiciansfriend.com was having a sale on some mic preamp that ended up being only like 40$, which is a great price on something like that. See if you have a store nearby that carries Behringer, which is a pretty cheap brand, but a lot of it works pretty well for being inexpensive (their mixers, power amps, etc especially).
