What are some good instruments to use with the Shure Beta 91 and the Shure Beta 98/s? Specifics please.
The Beta 91 is a PZM (Pressure Zone Microphone) that is specifically made for the Bass Drum. These operate somewhat differently than dynamic mics, so you'll have to experiment a little bit with placement; however, some engineers have good results just throwing them inside the drum itself. You may want to experiment with a pillow or something to keep it from bumping around and rattling, but be careful about touching either head on the drum with whatever you put in there as it may change the sound of the drum itself. You might also want to pull it away from the kit and get some air from it to see how it sounds if it's a studio situation.
You can also use the Beta91 on bass cabinets or other bass heavy instruments. You might do ok to mic the bass cabinet and also take a direct signal from the bass amp to better cover the full range of the instrument. I used to use direct only until a guy showed me how much low end I was missing by not using the cabinet signal, too.
The Beta98 is an all purpose mic: you can use it on guitar, woodwinds, brass, percussion... you name it. I know that Shure sells a special clip to attach it to drums, so that might clear up things a bit.
