Tie Pocket
Is it ok for groomsmen to wear tuxedos with only bow tie & pocket squares (no vest or cummerbund underneath)?
My groom-to-be wants tuxes and bow ties, which is fine with me... but we can't find any bow ties/vests/cummerbunds that match the colors of the rest of the bridal party, so we are considering having custom bow ties and pocket squares made. He thinks it would look strange to have no vest or cummerbund but my sources say otherwise. Is it common to do without vest or cummerbund?

nor any of the many books on men's fashion and etiquette, such as Alan Flusser's 'Dressing the Man'. There are indeed rules, ones which should only be bent by men experienced in formalwear. Those who disregard them work at their own peril.
Three points:
1)"Matching" the rest of the wedding party is considered a rookie mistake among well-dressed men. Black is the correct color for accessories. There very few exceptions.
2)Skipping the cummerbund is one of the more controversial subjects in black tie. It should only be attempted with single-breasted jackets if all of the following are true:
*The groom and groomsmen are all in excellent physical condition, including trim abs.
*Their tuxedo shirts all fit perfectly.
*The men will have their jackets buttoned at all times.
*The men will wear button-on suspenders, ensuring that their trousers are at waist level, so that no shirt will be visible below the jacket button.
3)Double-breasted tuxedos require no cummerbund or vest. Look into it:
