Vocal Mic
Looking for a good mic for operettic vocal recordings?
I'm buying a microphone to use for the recording of scholarship auditions. I have a rather operettic voice and usually when I record I get pretty bad feedback (especially with vabrato and when I sing anythign louder then pianissimo). Any advice on a good (and cheap) mic that would help cut out the feedback when I sing opera?
Most opera singers (or other professional singers) record using Condenser Microphones (such as the AT 4050, which is what my favorite mic is). Condenser Mics are best at picking up the full range of a singing voice (highs and lows, as well as louds and softs). These mics can cost upwards of $500, which may be a bit pricy.
The next best thing would be a good dynamic mic such as the Shure SM-58. Mics like this are more commonly used in pop recording (where you don't need to capture a wide dynamic range and don't mind hearing an emphasis in the middle frequencies, which pop singers tend to emphasize more.) Cost for these mics typically run between $100-150.
However, there is more to making a good recording than selecting a good mic (although mic selection is important.)
What are you recording to- tape, mp3 recorder, computer? As you can guess, recording to a computer gives you more flexibility (and the possibility of better sound quality) than the other choices, but may require you to spend extra for additional Recording Software. Furthermore, you may also be able to improve your recording quality by using a Mic Preamp to boost the sound recording levels and allow you to record louder sounds with less distortion and feedback. (This which will also probably be a necessary purchase if you decide to get a Condenser Mic.)
In addition, if you're getting distortion when recording, you might want to consider using a compressor (if you are recording into a computer, your audio recording program may have a compressor built into it.) You also might want to consider modifying your singing stance (moving slightly closer to the mic when singing softer, and backing away when singing louder.)
These techniques, however, can also be overdone, and it may take some practice and experimenting to find out just what tricks it takes to make your voice sound right.
Finally, if you are getting feedback in recording, you should consider turning off your speakers and recording while listening through headphones.
Good luck on your auditions- as you can see, making a good recording takes almost as much practice as singing well does!
